First thing we need to know is what is Kyusho? Kyusho is more than a technique of a martial art; it can also be used as a very effective way of self defense for beginners. This technique is used in any martial art to benefit, gain changes and increase the effectiveness of any conventional technique practiced before.

You can see in the video a simple demonstration on how to understand Kyusho. By just using brute force is very hard to bend someone’s wrist, will be a waste of time and energy. By just pressing a single pressure point on the wrist, we can make someone to do what I want (bend the wrist) without any effort. This is what we do in Kyusho; find an easy way or a chance to follow a next move or attack.

L-8 (Lung 8), this point lies on the inner aspect of the radial bone. More specifically in the hollow part just behind the head of the Radial bone. Detailed information about the radial bone: Wikipedia
Press: By pressing this point against the bone as you slide it up toward the thumb. It will cause pain and weakening of the hand. If you intensify the pain and will start to weaken more of the body, all the way down to the legs. The quicker you press the better the reaction will be, possibly causing the hand to lose all strength and spring open.
Rub: If you use your knuckle or other hard object to rub the point against the Radial Bone and toward the thumb, the increased speed and kinetic energy that is generated will cause much more reaction. The hand will spring open as the legs buckle and the body looses strength. This will also increase the pain dramatically, so that the mental functions are now impaired.

Location of L-8.
Strike: When we struck toward the thumb with a deep penetrating attack, the kinetic energy is read more intensely causing even more dramatic results. The pain is intense and can be felt up the arm and sometimes into the ear. The hand springs open but may also be paralyzed so that further use of the limb is severely impaired. The legs will actually lift off the ground as the body tries to coil into a fetal position. The Somatic Nerve System is the responsible for the loss of muscle’s control when the point is manipulated.

Once we know more about our body, we can start relating traditional martial arts movements in conjunction with these pressure points. As it is seen in the video, many martial arts patterns have sliding techniques; this feature could be an application for a technique.
This is the first and most important level in the study of Kyusho. It is the proper way to revive and or restore your training partner if they should need it. Without this knowledge and especially your skills in these methods, you should not experiment with Kyusho on another individual. As each person reacts differently according to their individual physiology, you must be fully prepared to handle any possibility responsibly and assuredly.

First step in the revival process is to actually fold the person’s legs and seat them up in the classic lotus position. This is done to impede the flow of energy and circulation to the lower extremities and relieve much stress on the body and brain. As in the prior lesson it will keep the individual ungrounded.
The arms are also folded for the same reasons as well as to clear them for your positioning to apply the revival process. Proper support of the head during this posturing is needed, as the unconscious individual will have no tension or control of the neck muscles. This will be important to not cause damage to the neck vertebrae or produce more concussion to the head. With the individual unconscious in the seated position, the chin is held to avoid excess head motion as we bring the chin down to stretch the back of the neck for application. Next we will slap the spinal accessory nerve that will be located in the stretched muscles on either side of the spine.

The point which increases the contraction of the diaphragm to fill the lungs with air, and restart normal breathing functions, is called “Spleen 17” (SP-17). This point is located one rib under the nipple as well as one inch lateral to it.
After seating the affected individual in a very specific manner we then simultaneously strike both sides up and in toward the throat. If the first application is not sufficient, you must apply again with more intensity. Usually once is enough.
If you strike only one side (SP-17) the diaphragm will expand and push air out of the lungs. This is not what is needed if the individual is not breathing. This is because when a body is struck there is a reflexive action to expand the diaphragm and expel excess air in the lungs. So by striking only one side, you may be doing more harm than good.

All of our organs and functions are electrical in nature with our brains like the generator, the spinal nerves as the circuit breaker and the peripheral nerves as the outlets in our home. As such for proper operations the body must be grounded or ungrounded for manipulation of body functions.
The main way we ground electricity is through the contact of nerves with the ground itself. On the back of the body the nerves associated with the Bladder Meridian (BL) are such grounds. On the hands, the back of the hands and arms are the grounding aspect of the anatomy. Alterations in position will not yield the proper results, so again attention to detail in critical.

TW-11 (Triple Warmer 11), is often referred to as the Golgi Tendon in many publications. This is in part true, however all tendons of the body contain what is called a Golgi Tendon Body. This is a monitor for the tendons to protect the body against tearing the specific tendon. This is done in a split second as a reflexive process. What actually occurs is that when the Tendon is in danger of tearing, the body relaxes all the neighboring and connected muscles to provide more slack.
